together or the trained sister would send for

ine.

(4) I let him off for the obvious reason that I was

lo-the to ruin him on his offence, &c.

The Governor refuses to see anything in these

excuses so I an face to face with the serious chance of

a reprimand from the Secretary of State.

The serious operation, I may add, was an ordinary one of confinement with the use of forceps and the woman made a perfect recovery.

My record at the Colonial Office is a good one so far and I have on this score no hesitation in asking you to befriend me in this particular instance as I feel that the punishment meted out to me is excessive more especially as the Governor allowed the officer after the

final report, to continue doing his ordinary duty for over two weeks and only suspended him two days before

the trial.

At my age (47) I have not much to look forward to and a reprimand which at 30 would not be so serious, is later on in life an affair which it is

difficult to live down.

As I have now no influential relative of my own to appeal to I an reluctantly compelled to ask for your assistance in the matter as I have enough of worldly wisdom to know that a word from you to the Secretary of State will make all the difference.

I hope you will not think I propose troubling you frequently with my affairs and I would not have done so now only I am advised that the punishment is exces- sive and if confirmed does away with my chances in the

future
